How To Decorate Your Dorm Room

So you are preparing to move away to college or university for the first time. This is certainly an exciting milestone in your life, though it can also be a nerve-wracking one for many people. One thing that can often make the transition better is to live in the university dorms, where there are many other people who are in the same boat. They can sympathize! When you have your room, however, it often looks quite boring and bare. Make the space fit you and your personality! How will you decorate your dorm room? Here are some things to help get you started:

Choosing Your Duvet

Your bed, though it performs a simple function as a place for you to lay your head at night, also plays a significant role in the decoration of your room. Choose a bold duvet! You can go with a solid colour, patterns, et cetera. Match your personality with your duvet, and your will be well on your way to a great dorm room with lots of interest.

Spark Interest On The Walls

You won’t be able to paint the walls of your dorm room, which is unfortunate because they are often a boring colour. However, you can still add significant interest! Posters are often the popular choice, but they are not the only choice. You can also purchase framed artwork or use wall decals to boost interest and colour in your space. Try not to leave your walls completely bare!

If you are not fond of wall decals or posters, you still have more options. Many people choose to use clear or white Christmas lights in their room to create a fantasy fairy feeling. This also helps introduce unique lighting! Others may choose to hand sheets of light fabric. This just goes to show you are only limited by your imagination.

Rearrange The Space

Sometimes your design and decoration is directly influenced by the position of the furniture in your dorm room. Experiment with different layouts and how they play into your idea for the decoration and comfort of your room. You might be surprised at how much of a role the arrangement plays!

Area Rugs

Are your dorm room floors going to be tile or wooden? In many cases they will be either of these or something similar—it’s not often you find dorm rooms with carpeted floor, since hard floors tend to be easier for staff to clean between each year. Thus, why not add coziness to your room and design by using area rugs? There are countless patterns and colours to choose from—go bold!
