3 Tips For Designing Outdoor Spaces
Jan 19, 2018 // Home, Interior Design //

Design is not just limited to the inside of your home. Many people who have access to a backyard love to design spaces out there. It can be, after all, a great place to entertain family and friends in the warmer months (e.g. a backyard barbeque or watching fireworks). Without walls, however, some people find designing outdoor spaces a little bit more difficult to handle, simply because of the different type of space than what they might be used to. Here are three key tips to designing outdoor spaces to help you make this process smoother:

Understand Your Style

What kind of style do you normally use inside your home? Just because it is indoors does not mean the design cannot function outside. It will, obviously, need to be different in some ways simply because it is outside, but the overall style or theme of your design can still remain the same. For instance, did you design your living room with a seaside theme in mind? Consider how to bring that colour to outdoor furniture, including umbrellas and seat cushions. Will a stone pizza oven help makeĀ  your rustic theme pop? Try that out! The possibilities are endless.

Consider The Space

What outdoor space do you actually have to work with? This should be the first thing you think about when you are embarking on a design project outside. The space itself can dictate what you are even able to try doing. For instance, if you have a pool, you will have to design around that. Perhaps the size of your backyard will dictate the extent of your work. Consider this before making a concrete plan.

Decide On Function

What do you want your outdoor space to do? When designing outdoor spaces, like any other space inside your home, you have to think about the function. Above all else you have to make sure the space functions the way you want it to, regardless of the design elements, style of furniture, et cetera.
